چکیده

Asymptomatic enamel and dentin cracks can pose a risk for multiple pathological and undesired consequences if intervention is postponed. This article reviews asymptomatic enamel and dentin cracks, and presents current management approaches utilized by a sample of general dentists. Becoming familiar with all forms of asymptomatic enamel and dentin cracks is crucial to adopting a proactive approach of prevention, early diagnosis, and intervention in order to control the potential detrimental effects of these cracks on the dentition.

The dentin-enamel junction and the fracture of human teeth.

The dentin-enamel junction (DEJ), which is the interfacial region between the dentin and outer enamel coating in teeth, is known for its unique biomechanical properties that provide a crack-arrest barrier for flaws formed in the brittle enamel1. In this work, we re-examine how cracks propagate in the proximity of the DEJ, and specifically quantify, using interfacial fracture mechanics, the frac...

Effect of tooth substrate and porcelain thickness on porcelain veneer failure loads in vitro.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Bonded porcelain veneers are widely used esthetic restorations. High success and survival rates have been reported, but failures do occur. Fractures are the commonest failure mode. Minimally invasive or thin veneers have gained popularity. Increased enamel and porcelain thickness improve the strength of veneers bonded to enamel, but less is known about dentin or mixed subst...

Crack arrest within teeth at the dentinoenamel junction caused by elastic modulus mismatch.

Enamel and dentin compose the crowns of human teeth. They are joined at the dentinoenamel junction (DEJ) which is a very strong and well-bonded interface unlikely to fail within healthy teeth despite the formation of multiple cracks within enamel during a lifetime of exposure to masticatory forces. These cracks commonly are arrested when reaching the DEJ. The phenomenon of crack arrest at the D...

Mixed-mode stress intensity factors for kink cracks with finite kink length loaded in tension and bending: application to dentin and enamel.

Fracture toughness resistance curves describe a material's resistance against crack propagation. These curves are often used to characterize biomaterials like bone, nacre or dentin as these materials commonly exhibit a pronounced increase in fracture toughness with crack extension due to co-acting mechanisms such as crack bridging, crack deflection and microcracking. The knowledge of appropriat...

Morphology and fracture of enamel.

This study examines the inter-relation between enamel morphology and crack resistance by sectioning extracted human molars after loading to fracture. Cracks appear to initiate from tufts, hypocalcified defects at the enamel-dentin junction, and grow longitudinally around the enamel coat to produce failure. Microindentation corner cracks placed next to the tufts in the sections deflect along the...
